la Moneda

In a colony that lacks its own currency, the "Isla del Encanto" medallion is meant to celebrate Puerto Rico's distinct cultural heritage. "El plátano" (the plantain) - brought from Africa in the early days of Spanish colonization - has become a staple in the Puerto Rican diet and represents the island's intrinsic tie to Africa. The reverse side features a skeleton key - a symbol stamped onto Puerto Rico's first coins. The key was used to signify that that the coin was from  "La llave del Caribe" (the key to the Caribbean) - due to Puerto Rico's unique location bordering both the Atlantic and the Caribbean.
